Hereditary Angioedema

Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disorder that causes severe, recurrent swelling in various parts of the body, including the face, hands, feet, airways, and gastrointestinal tract. Unlike allergic reactions, HAE is caused by a deficiency or malfunction in a protein called C1 inhibitor, leading to uncontrolled swelling episodes that can be painful and, in some cases, life-threatening if they affect the throat or airways. HAE swelling does not respond to the usual anti-allergy treatment as it is not an allergy.

Managing HAE requires specialized care and treatment to prevent and control attacks. Dr. Priya Bowry is one of the few specialists in Sub-Saharan Africa (outside of South Africa) with expertise in diagnosing and treating Hereditary Angioedema. Her extensive experience in this field ensures that patients receive comprehensive care, including personalized treatment plans that address the unique challenges of this rare condition.

At The Allergy Clinic, we provide expert guidance on managing HAE, offering advanced therapies and support to improve the quality of life for those affected by this complex disorder. We also work closely with HAE Kenya for patient advocacy and education.
